Sligo Grammar School student, Rowan Kelleher will represent the region at the National finals of the Soapbox Public Speaking Competition in Dublin in November.
The Regional qualifying competition was held in Tubbercurry last Friday, 16th October, and Rowan, along with four of his schoolmates, competed against students from other second-level schools in the under 18 category.
This competition is run by Europe Direct and each competitor had to deliver a three-minute speech on the topic “Charity Begins at Home”
The Sligo Grammar School students who competed were Russell Nairn, Rowan Kelleher, Cameron Hill, Alula Keevil and Carla Blennerhassett.
Rowan was the outright winner in the Under 19 category with Cameron Hill placed third.
The winner in the 19 and over category was two-times winner, Dolores Brady.
Prizes were presented by MEP Marian Harkin.
Rowan won an iPad Mini for his efforts last Friday but stands to win €1,000 and a trip to Brussels if he wins in November. We wish him the best of luck in the National finals.
