SGS Rowing Club has been building momentum in recent years under the guidance of coach Ronan Ivers and has enjoyed a huge boost in numbers this year on the back of the success of the Irish rowing crews at the Olympics. The students train indoors on rowing machines every Friday after school. The focus is on developing good technique on the ergometer so that this can transition to the boat. As well developing the rowing stroke the students improve their overall fitness, strength and flexibility. Training focuses on individual improvement as well as forming teams to race against each other and prepare for upcoming competitions. As students improve at training they are invited to join a local rowing club to develop their competency on the water. On Sunday 17th October four SGS students competed in the Head of the Garavogue Regatta with Sligo Rowing Club. Fiachra Dowd, Harry Graham and Finn & Conn Reid competed in the 3km boat race. With ideal rowing conditions the crews put in excellent performances and recorded some great results. Conn Reid and Fiachra Dowd completed the time trial in 13 minutes 58 seconds, while Conn’s older brother Finn Reid finished in 12 minutes 27 seconds. A huge performance from Harry Graham’s crew saw them cover the course in a time of 11 minutes 45 seconds – the 3rd fastest crew overall on the day! SGS Rowing Club looks forward to bring more students to competitions and improving results in the future.
