It is with great sadness that Sligo Grammar School mourns the passing of Mr. Michael Leyden. Michael taught in Sligo Grammar School since the late 1980s and was an extremely committed teacher of English, earning the respect and admiration of students, colleagues and friends. His students will remember him as a very inspiring and dedicated English teacher, who instilled in them a lasting appreciation of and love for the subject. Michael was fiercely loyal to Sligo Grammar School, its students and staff, and was always involved in whatever was going on. Past pupils will remember him playing in many of the Staff Vs Student soccer matches, and indeed his interest in soccer was clear to all as he was a loyal supporter of Sligo Rovers. He ran the Debating Club in the school for many years and edited the school magazine. Both of his daughters were pupils in the school. Michael had a great sense of loyalty and justice and always stood up for his students and colleagues. As well as being a great Sligo Rovers man, it won’t surprise his students to discover that Michael was also heavily involved in the Sligo Drama Circle, as actor, director, playwright, stage hand and long-standing member of the committee. Our thoughts and deep sympathy are with his wife Myriam, his daughters Gloria and Susi, his granddaughter Ailbhe Luz, his brothers and sisters and his extended family.
