On Wednesday 25th April the German Ambassador to Ireland, Deike Potzel, visited Sligo Grammar School. A special assembly was held in Calry church, where the choir sang Sei Stille Dean Herron by Mendelsohn and students read prayers and read in German. Ms Potzel addressed the student body, telling them that she was born in East Berlin and as a result has really experienced at first hand the contrast between the restrictions of the Socialist regime in Eastern Germany and the many freedoms offered by the West and especially the EU.
Afterwards Ms. Potzel came back to the school where she met the German students and viewed their work. The junior years performed a song and dance for her and she was very impressed!
The school was delighted to welcome the German Ambassador, particularly our German department! See some photos HERE
