Gaisce – the Presidents Award, has been part of the TY programme in SGS for many years. It challenges students to commit to a self-development programme that spans the whole year. The students who finish the challenge are awarded the Bronze Gaisce Award. Many start, but only the most tenacious and committed will get to finish Gaisce with the final Adventure Journey at the beginning of 5th year. Last week, seven 5th year students had a busy start to the school year as they completed their Bronze Gaisce Award, begun in TY. On Thursday the 31st of August the Gaisce students travelled to Boyle, Co. Roscommon and then walked the Greenway cycle track from the town out to Lough Key Forest Park. They were accompanied by Ms Tiernan who co-ordinates Gaisce in the school, and Mr Lynch. After lunch in the park, the students took on the Boda Borg challenge, where they worked together to solve a number of clues to complete a task. From Lough Key they walked out to Lough Keel Scout Camp where they camped overnight. The following morning the students walked back along the Greenway cycle track to Wooden Bridge where they did stand-up paddle boarding with Lough Key SUP. The students were blessed with glorious weather and perfect conditions on the lake. They then finished the remainder of the walk (a total of 20km) into Boyle and returned by bus to SGS. Well done to all seven for finishing the Gaisce challenge, and thanks to their teachers for giving up their time to take them on their Adventure Journey. SEE SOME PHOTOS HERE
