This term has been a fantastic one for our debaters and public speakers. The SGS DebSoc got up and running early in September and Ms Hynes has been joined by Ms. Finnerty in running the society. First, second, third, TY and fifth year students are involved and the meeting days are now alternating between Tuesdays and Wednesdays in order to facilitate students who are involved in other activities. The school was well represented at the regional Soapbox public speaking competition and Genevieve Cox, 3rd year was the overall regional winner with Aidan O’Reilly, 5th year coming in as runner-up. Genevieve went on to represent the Region in the National Finals in Dublin in November and although she didn’t win, she did the school proud! Our concern debating team has won all their debates to date in this, the league phase, of the prestigious competition. Only one more debate to go in this phase, to be held in the school on 7th December. Good Luck, girls! A bus-load of our debaters went to a workshop in NUIG in October. They learnt about Mace/Parliamentary style debating and participated in a competition. Two of our students, Caoilte Brannigan and Robyn Scott emerged as winners. More workshops and competitions are scheduled for the rest of the year.
