No sooner has Sligo Grammar School said goodbye to Mrs Lipsett and Mrs O’Donnell than we once again bid “Adieu” and “Happy retirement” to Mr Alfred Potter. After 35 years of teaching in SGS Mr Potter is bowing out and beginning his “second life”! For many years Mr Potter formed the backbone of Modern Languages in the school. A highly talented linguist, he taught both French and German to many SGS students over the years. However it is probably as Choir Master that he will be most fondly remembered. He directed the school choir almost from the moment he joined the school, and was responsible for many wonderful Carol Services and Prize Day services over the years. Thanks to his prodigious musical talent and attention to detail the Sligo Grammar School Choir went from strength to strength under his tutelage. He brought the choir to sing on RTE on numerous occasions and prepared it for many concerts and special services both in Sligo and Dublin. Alf also directed two very successful productions of “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” for the school. For many years Mr Potter acted as House Parent in both the Boys House and the Girls House. After such a busy and dedicated school career, he most certainly deserves time to enjoy a bit of freedom and a chance to relax and enjoy what else life has to offer. We wish him all the very best in the future. You will be missed, Alf!
