It is with great sadness that the school mourns the passing of past teacher Maurice Flanagan. Maurice passed away peacefully on Wednesday 14th October in Dublin, where he had been living since retiring from Sligo Grammar School in 1999. Most of Mr Flanagan’s teaching life was spent in SGS where he was, primarily an English teacher. He did teach other subjects from time to time, and he particularly enjoyed teaching Art for a number of years. Indeed Maurice was interested in all areas of culture and creativity, getting involved in the cultural life of Sligo Town and, indeed of Sligo Grammar School. As English teacher he encouraged his students in their writing, many winning prizes in local and national competitions. For a number of years he was editor of the Sligo Grammar School Magazine, a role he enjoyed. Maurice was an excellent colleague, a kind and considerate man with a great sense of humour. He was an advocate for his students, supporting them in their studies and always there to help out if it was needed. Those he worked with remember him with fondness as do those he taught. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
