Deserted School – March 2020

Like every other school in the country, this week has left Sligo Grammar School sadly deserted. Locker areas are empty except for abandoned jackets and schoolbooks. The occasional member of staff can be seen working in isolation in their rooms and offices, but otherwise all our teachers are working in their “home classroom” sending work to their students and marking it as the students send it back in via Office 365. For certain subjects teachers are setting up a video classroom and interacting directly with their students.  It is important that our pupils keep an eye on their Office 365 account and the school is advising all students to treat the next two weeks exactly as they would a school day – beginning at 8.50am and ending at 3.10pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and at 3.50pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The school is acutely aware that it will be difficult for the students to keep themselves isolated from their peers but nevertheless we urge them to think of others – their grandparents and elderly neighbours in particular – and step up to the mark, staying away from their friends for the duration of this emergency. Keep active, too, everyone – students, parents and teachers alike! It is important that we look after our mental wellbeing at a time like this. A walk in the countryside is just the thing to counteract cabin fever!
