Sligo Grammar School is lucky to have students and teachers from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and the week of 2nd to 6th of March was dedicated to that diversity. A special – and diverse – committee worked with Ms McGuinness, the Guidance Counsellor, to organise a week of activities to highlight the richness of diversity in the school. On Monday morning the week was kick-started with a special assembly for the whole school with special guest Mabel Chah, a native of Cameroon who has lived in Sligo for the last number of years. Mabel told the students about her experience as a refugee and her involvement in Sligo Global Kitchen. Mabel finished by singing for the whole school, and was very well received. The week continued with a variety of activities both during lunchtime and during classes. International diversity quizzes were held for all classes with prizes for the winners, and lunchtimes saw students from all years get involved in Karaoke, a Talent Show, and a Lunchtime Concert. The school debating society, SGS DebSoc, hosted a debate in the school foyer on Thursday which was very well attended. The motion – This House Believes that quotas are the only solution to gender equality and diversity in the workplace. The opposition won after an audience vote! During the course of the week the Geography department had students put together a world map showing the many countries they and their families come from. On Friday the week drew to a close with an International Morning. This event was held in the Sports Hall and featured stalls where students from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds presented national customs, dress, music, dance and food. Every class group visited the exhibition and experienced the wonderful diversity our students bring to the school. Needless to say the event was hugely successful. The festive atmosphere was helped by the fact that the day was a Non-Uniform Charity Day as well, with the senior LCVP students collecting funds for the North West Hospice and Pieta House. There was a positive and fun atmosphere around the school for the week and it really helped the students appreciate the many and diverse traditions and cultures in the school. Photos are HERE.
