Diversity Week & Seachtain na Gaeilge

Posted on : March 16, 2018

In March, Sligo Grammar School held a combined Seachtain na Gaeilge and Diversity Week. This was a whole-school project designed to bring the wonderful diversity of our school to the fore. The week show-cased the many nationalities represented in SGS. Activities were held every lunchtime and these included International Bingo – or Biongo as Gaeilge!, an International Quiz (Tráth na gCeist), Traditional Irish music and a Puc Fada competition. A “Diversity” Talent Show was held on Thursday afternoon and “Dáta Dall” – Blind Date – was held in Irish on Tuesday evening. Every class contributed to a Whole School Art Project – a “Diversity Tree”, which will be displayed on the landing outside the Library. A Treasure Hunt in Irish (Toraíocht Taisce) was organised for first year students, while TY competed for the SGS GAA Football Title! On Friday the week ended with a whole-school non-uniform day where all students were asked to dress in green in honour of St. Patrick’s Day or in their own National dress. An International morning was held in the school gym where the school population was treated to the food, music and dance of the many cultures represented in our school. The week was a great success and was truly a team effort, with our chefs and kitchen staff providing some delicious international dishes for lunch every day, and many of the teachers getting involved in the activities – including dressing in green on Friday for the week that was in it!
