Sligo Grammar School was delighted to hear of the success of past-pupil Hazel Higgins who was the ultimate winner of RTE’s Painting the Nation competition This was the second series of Painting the Nation and Hazel had to progress through a series of artistic challenges filmed around the country. The winning piece, a view of Birr Castle, was judged to be the a very accomplished piece, displaying excellent handling of paint, colour mixing, drawing skills and composition, as well as being a very atmospheric work. Hazel was presented with her prize by actress Pauline McLynn, pictured here. The painting will hang in Dublin Castle and will become part of the OPW State Art Collection. Proudest of all is her old art teacher, Máire Hynes, who, along with her other former teachers, wishes her the very best of luck in her artistic future!
