On Friday 19th May Sligo Grammar School’s Leaving Cert class had a special day of celebration to mark the end of their six years in the school. The day started with a special assembly for the whole school. Presentations were made to individual students for their achievements during the term including the presentation of Connacht Senior League Cup medals to the SGS team who won the cup earlier in the year. The leaving Cert students formed a choir and sang for the school while the address was made by the Deputy Head Boy, Jude Perry and the Deputy Head Girl. Sara Bourke. A special video was made by the 6th year girls which was hugely enjoyed by the whole school. It will be up-loaded to this website soon, so have a look for yourself! The assembly also marked the retirement of teacher Pat Doherty who spoke to the students and sang Cat Stevens’ “Father and Son”. The day continued with a special breakfast for the 6th years and was followed by the traditional Staff vs Leaving Certs soccer game. The staff won (again!). Fun and games on the pitch followed (featuring a lot of water and suds) exclusively for the 6th year students and the whole atmosphere in the school was one of genuine fun and celebration. The Leaving Certs then went home to prepare for the evening service in Calry Church. The service, conducted by Canon Patrick Bamber, was very touching – happy and sad in equal measure. The 6th year students again sang for the congregation and the Head Boy, Andrew Wood-Martin and Head Girl, Jayne Feehily gave the address. Another video made by the students, was shown, this time more nostalgic in tone. Presentations were made to the students and after the service everyone was invited to supper in the dining hall. See our valedictorians and some images from the day HERE. Leaving Cert students now go into Study Hall to concentrate on their upcoming exams. A big thank you goes to Cian Burns who was a huge help in editing the videos.
