Congratulations to 5th year student James Devaney who won first prize in this year’s Callan-Tansey Solicitors Essay Competition. This competition encourages senior secondary school students to think about current issues in society , using references from the work of W.B. Yeats as a springboard for discussion. This year the topic of the essay was inspired by Yeats’ poem Sailing to Byzantium
“Caught in that sensual music all neglect Monuments of unageing intellect” Does our society believe that the old should even have a voice anymore; and what do we lose, if we lose something, when we dispense with the wisdom of the ages?
James addressed this issue in his essay and won first prize of an Apple iPad air which was presented at the Awards Ceremony by journalist John Waters.
