On Monday 28th November Sligo Grammar School held a special Service of Remembrance and Reconciliation in Calry Church of Ireland, Sligo. The service honoured the Irish men and women who gave their lives in both World Wars and in the service of their country during the last 100 years. Students and staff were involved in the service and the school was delighted and honoured to welcome many special guests who represented Church and State as well as Local Government and our neighbouring schools. The Papal Nuncio, Charles J. Browne, and Mrs. Gail Boyd, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Co Tyrone and representative of H.M. Queen Elizabeth both laid wreaths on behalf of Sligo Grammar School in remembrance of the many past pupils who fell in both World Wars. Wreaths in remembrance of all Irishmen and women who died in both WW I and WW II were laid by Minister for Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht, T.D. Heather Humphries and by representatives of the Midlands Legion. The Gardaí and Irish Defense Forces were represented by Superintendent Michael Clancy and Commandant John Martin , and each laid a wreath in honour of their fallen comrades. Other guests included Bishop Kevin Doran, Bishop Ferran Glenfield, Mr Tom Elliot, M.P., Sligo County Council Chairman Hubert Keaney and Cllr. Sinéad Maguire. Sligo Grammar School was particularly pleased to welcome students and teachers who represented other Sligo schools, including Summerhill College, Sligo, Mercy College, Sligo, Ballinode College, Sligo, Coláiste Mhuire, Ballymote and St Mary’s , Ballisodare. The Ceremony was a very moving occasion for all involved and it was a great honour for Sligo Grammar School to welcome so many friends from across all walks of life and traditions.
