Studying Sustainable Development

Posted on : September 28, 2023

This year Ms Moore’s TY geography class is focussing on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This area of study incorporates a series of challenges for the students,  to illustrate the many issues that have to be overcome if the Goals are to be achieved. The first SDG is “No Poverty”, and the geography class undertook a project to help them understand the daily issues faced by children in Dhaka, Bangladesh. UNICEF estimates that over 43% of the population live below the international poverty line in Bangladesh. Children there make 200 bags a day to earn money to feed their family. The TY students undertook to do this, making 200 bags in class and Ms Moore paid the students 20c, the going rate for 200 bags in Bangladesh.  The Paper Bag Game illustrates how people work hard yet earn so little. Using real cost-of-living prices and wages, players see if they could survive making and selling paper bags.  Learn more about the SDGs here: https://sdgs.un.org/goals, and see the SDG Classroom projects at https://www.concern.net/schools-and-youth/educational-resources
